What is Microscape?

Microscape is an exciting and inclusive science outreach initiative that brings the fascinating microbial world to life through hands-on, experiential learning! This dynamic program delivers microbiology- and genomics-based education to classrooms and communities in Nova Scotia.

Microscape is a collaboration between Discovery Centre and Dalhousie University’s Institute for Comparative Genomics (ICG).

To date, Microscape has reached over 1,500 people in-person!

What’s Next?

  • May 24, 2025: Microscape Biodiversity Day at Discovery Centre
  • September 20, 2025: Microscape International Microorganism Day at Discovery Centre
  • Coming Fall 2025: Interactive Classroom Workshops

Microscape Biodiversity Day & International Microorganism Day
Celebrated at Discovery Centre, these events showcase the vital importance of biodiversity and the role of microbes in ecosystems and human health. Visitors engage in hands-on activities, games, and demos exploring microscopic samples, genomics, ecosystems, and soil health.

Sprouting Science Camp: Exploring Garden Science
Sprouting Science Camp combines hands-on garden science with Microscape programming to inspire curiosity about the natural world. Youth explore soil health and microbes through engaging activities informed by Microscape’s expertise. Special guest speakers, including ICG, provide deeper insights into the vital connections between soil, microbes, and thriving ecosystems.

Education and Outreach
In October, Discovery Centre and ICG joined the AST Conference for Educators at Halifax West High School to spotlight microbial education. In December, Microscape volunteers visited Park View Education Centre in Bridgewater. They presented to three high school biology classes on the use of environmental DNA for studying microbiomes. They also hosted ‘ask us anything’ sessions, where students could ask questions about what it’s like to be a student researcher.
