A banner year for the Discovery Centre
May 10, 2017 (Toronto) – The Canadian Association of Science Centres (CASC) wrapped up the 15th Annual Conference with the CASCADE Awards on May 6 to recognize outstanding achievement by both individuals and organizations Canada-wide. This year, Nova Scotia’s Discovery Centre received the Award for Best Program.
The CASC Annual Conference brought together over 160 science centre professionals from across the country for a three-day conference held at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto. This conference provides a range of educational sessions, keynote speakers and an opportunity to share ideas and theories with like-minded science centre professionals. Supporting growth and its mission to inspire a creative and prosperous Canada through science and technology engagement.
The Discovery Centre’s Tide to Technology program was recognized at the CASCADE Awards in Toronto for Best Program in a small institution. Tide to Technology addresses Nova Scotia’s need to raise awareness about oceans and ocean technology-related careers. Supported by the Ocean Technology Council of Nova Scotia (OTCNS), the Discovery Centre is able to deliver this hands-on technology-based program to students in grades 8-12 as part of their Science on the Road program, delivered anywhere in Nova Scotia free of charge.
In its 32-year history, the Discovery Centre has garnered national attention and recognition for the excellence of its people, programs, and exhibits. “We are so proud of our team of science professionals and how they continue to develop leading-edge educational content in STEAM,” says Dov Bercovici, President and CEO of the Discovery Centre.
The Discovery Centre is now located in its 40,000 square ft. facility, four floors that feature four themed galleries, an immersive Dome Theatre, maker space and travelling exhibit gallery. Within the last 12 weeks since opening, the Discovery Centre has hosted over 75,000 visitors.
